  23.   1.  Product Description
  24.  
  25.      IRIX 5.3 (Sherwood) is an upwardly compatible version of IRIX 5.2 which
  26.      incorporates bug fixes and performance enhancements. IRIX 5.3 is supported
  27.      on all platforms that run IRIX 5.2 plus Indy R4600, Indigo2 R4600SC,
  28.      Corona, and OnyxLE (R8000 based systems are not supported by any IRIX 5.*
  29.      release). The purpose of this release is to provide new features and
  30.      enhanced performance relative to previous versions of IRIX 5.
  31.  
  32.      Major changes to IRIX 5.3:
  33.  
  34.         o  Parallelized TCP/IP. See eoe release notes section 3.1
  35.           (eoe1.man.relnotes)
  36.         o  Improved virtual memory performance. See eoe release notes section
  37.           3.1.
  38.         o  Improved NFS performance. NFS2 compatibility includes the equivalent
  39.           of the aggressive read-ahead patch.
  40.         o  NFS 3.0 is now part of the optional NFS product (NFS2 still used as
  41.           default). (nfs3.sw.nfs3 is sub-system for NFS 3.0).
  42.         o  Caching file system is available. See onc3_eoe release notes
  43.           (onc3_eoe.man.relnotes). Cachefs works with NFS2 only.
  44.         o  Enhanced IO4 serial driver performance. See eoe release notes
  45.           section 3.1.
  46.         o  Sendmail 8.6.9 is used. See eoe release notes section 3.2.1.
  47.         o  a number of IRIX 5.2 bugs fixed
  48.         o  Remote printing to BSD printers is now supported. BSD printers can
  49.           be installed using GUI tools. lpsched also accepts print jobs from
  50.           remote lpd(1M) daemons. See the print release notes
  51.           (print.man.relnotes).
  52.         o  New inst includes a GUI (swmgr is command for GUI based inst),
  53.           improved space checking, live inst supported for layered products and
  54.           patches, better conflict resolution mechanism. See eoe release notes
  55.           section 2.1
  56.         o  GUI available for managing swap space (cswap). See Sysadmdesktop
  57.           release notes (sysadmdesktop.man.relnotes).
  58.         o  Improved desktop performance.
  59.         o  Mediamail updated. See Sysadmdesktop release notes.
  60.         o  New C++ (native) compiler. cfront translator is still provided. See

  62.         o  New version of dbx using the same back end as CaseVision (old dbx as

  65.         o  OpenGL support for VGX graphics (VGXT and Skywriter) and Personal
  66.           IRIS workstations (8-bit, G, and TG graphics options). The only
  67.           supported graphics that don't support OpenGL is GTX. Some OpenGL
  68.           operations are significantly slower on GR1 and VGX graphics than the
  69.           IrisGL equivalents. See the gl_dev release notes.
  70.         o  OpenGL extensions added for all platforms that support OpenGL. See
  71.           the gl_dev release notes.
  72.         o  X11R6 libraries and clients (X server is X11R5 based, with some 6

  88.           IRIX 5.3 is supported on all platforms that run IRIX 5.2 plus Indy

  208.      There are no plans for any training classes for the field (that is, there
  209.      are no 'traveling' training sessions planned).
  210.  
  211.      Education Design Technologies (EDT) will incorporate 5.3 changes into all
  212.      existing course materials. Expected completion date is Jan 15, 1995.
  213.  
  214.      EDT is also preparing 5.3 transition course materials for use by local
  215.      training organizations. Expected completion date is Jan 15, 1995.
  216.

  331.   6. Technical support delivery issues (Complexity of support expected)
  332.  
  333.         o Inst and Updating:
  334.  
  335.           Installing 5.3 is expected to be the initial area where users will
  336.           require the largest support:
  337.  
  338.              +  Inst has been updated and changed for 5.3. See the EOE release
  339.                notes (chapter 2) for information about inst and known bugs and
  340.                limitations . TACs should prepare by making sure they have
  341.                support personnel familiar with the new inst, the known bugs and
  342.                the issues that follow.
  343.  
  344.              +  An online version of the Software Installation Administrator's
  345.                Guide is now provided with IRIX (this used to only be provided
  346.                in hardcopy form). All support personnel should be familiar with
  347.                this manual (using InSight, customers can read the manual from
  348.                the CD without installing the 5.3 books -- see previous section
  349.                'Documentation').
  350.  
  351.              +  The inst(1M) and swmgr(1M) man pages should be reviewed. swmgr
  352.                is a GUI version of inst. Also, many people forget inst has
  353.                online help which is always useful.
  354.  
  355.              + One inst bug not mentioned in the release notes is that 'inst
  356.                -af' is broken. The bug is that inst -a does not mark anything
  357.                for install and ends up spending a lot of time reading the inst
  358.                history and the distribution, then exits with:
  359.  
  360.                    ERROR: Software Manager: automatic installation failed: Nothing
  361.                           selected for installation.
  362.  
  363.                This only happens when the product being requested is a new
  364.                product, automatic installations of upgrades should work fine.
  365.                To workaround, use:
  366.  
  367.                      inst -u upgrade_and_new -af distribution   or
  368.                      inst -u upgrade_or_new -af distribution
  369.  
  370.              +  inst now detects software conflicts and presents the user with
  371.                some choices to resolve the conflicts. Example:
  372.  
  373.                       Inst> keep *
  374.                       Inst> install 4DDN.sw.4DDN
  375.                       Inst> go
  376.                       ERROR : Conflicts must be resolved.
  377.  
  378.                       4DDN.sw.4DDN cannot be installed because of missing prerequisites:
  379.                         1a. Do not install 4DDN.sw.4DDN (1021572033)
  380.                         1b. Also install eoe1.sw.dlpi (0 - 2147483647) and eoe1.sw.svr4net
  381.                             (0 - 2147483647)
  382.  
  383.                       Resolve conflicts by typing "conflicts choice choice ..."
  384.                       Or try help conflicts
  385.  
  386.                       Inst> conflicts 1a
  387.                       No conflicts
  388.                       Inst> go
  389.  
  390.                If the user typed 'conflicts 1b' inst would have marked
  391.                eoe1.sw.dlpi and eoe1.sw.svr4net for installation and the
  392.                installation would have run when 'go' was typed.
  393.  
  394.              +  Some problems have cropped up resolving conflicts with patches.
  395.                You may see a message similar to this from inst:
  396.  
  397.                      Patch patchSG0000088.WorkShop_sw.cvspeed does not have base subsystem
  398.                      WorkShop.sw.cvspeed version 1008100735 to 1011178010 installed
  399.                        1a. Do not install patchSG0000088.WorkShop_sw.cvspeed (1008100815)
  400.  
  401.                and will find that the conflict can not be resolved. This
  402.                happens if inst 'thinks' the patch does not have the base
  403.                subsystem installed which the patch requires. To workaround,
  404.                remove the patch to resolve the conflict:
  405.  
  406.                       Inst> remove nameofthepatch
  407.  
  408.                From swmgr the patch can be removed by clicking on the remove
  409.                box next to the patch in question. This problem should only be
  410.                seen by 5.3 beta sites upgrading to the 5.3 MR version.
  411.  
  412.              +  There is an error in how rqs(1) calculates how much time is
  413.                needed until completion. As a result, rqs will 'stall' at 99% or
  414.                100% for a period of time (up to a few minutes). (note: rqs(1)
  415.                runs as part of the inst process.) This may confuse some users
  416.                into thinking the system has hung since they were seeing 10%,
  417.                20%, 30% etc. every few seconds up until it reaches 99% (at
  418.                which time 99% is displayed for a few minutes and then things
  419.                continue). (Users do get some feedback since the disk is
  420.                accessing during this time -- but in some cases the user can't
  421.                hear the disk or see any indicators of disk activity).
  422.  
  423.              +  IRIX 5.3 inst supports 'live inst' once you are at 5.3. With
  424.                live inst you can install software (that previously only
  425.                installed with miniroot) on a running 'live' system. After the
  426.                live inst you may have to reboot (many optional products will
  427.                not require rebooting; only those that have kernel modules, or
  428.                startup daemons at boot time). Some additional post inst
  429.                processing is done during system shutdown following a live inst
  430.                (rqs is run, etc.). If the user has an Indy and they reboot
  431.                using the on/off button (this initiates a controlled shutdown) a
  432.                problem can result if the post inst processing done during the
  433.                shutdown takes more then two minutes to complete. The cause of
  434.                this is a 2 minute timer that gets invoked when an Indy shuts
  435.                down with the on/off switch. If after two minutes the system has
  436.                not shut down the power is turned off. This could interrupt an
  437.                rqs(1) that was in process leaving any file it was processing in
  438.                a corrupted state. The result will probably be a system in an
  439.                unusable state requiring a re-install via miniroot.
  440.  
  441.                Everybody upgrading to IRIX 5.3 will do so from miniroot. The
  442.                problem described above would not be seen following a miniroot
  443.                installation (live install upgrade to 5.3 is not supported --
  444.                have to be at 5.3 to use live installs). IRIX 5.3 beta sites
  445.                could possibly run into this since they could do a live install
  446.                to 5.3 MR. The problem could be seen in the future if there is
  447.                ever a patch or a post 5.3 release that does cause a long rqs
  448.                run at shutdown. The workaround is to reboot using the the
  449.                reboot(1M) command, init 6, etc. after a live inst and avoid

  484.         o  6.0 Cross Compilers:

  486.           The 6.0 IDO CD includes a 64 bit cross compiler environment to allow
  487.           6.0 binaries to be developed on 5.2 systems. The 64 bit cross were
  488.           tested on IRIX 5.3 and should work fine. One difference between 5.2
  489.           and 5.3 is that the documents asks the user to use the patch34 inst
  490.           -- 5.3 inst is 'patch aware' and will work as is.
  491.  
  492.         o  GR 1.1 is not supported with OpenGL (applies to PIs):
  493.  
  494.           PI users that want to use OpenGL will need a HUR-RE2 ("Refurbished
  495.           Raster Engine Upgrade") to update to a GR 1.2 (hinv will show
  496.           "Graphics board: GR1.1"). Many PIs already have this update (the GR
  497.           1.2 gives an improvement in X windows performance and many systems
  498.           were updated when PIs went from 3.* News to 4.0.* X).

  500.         o  Kernel Stack Overflows:
  501.  
  502.           A potential problem exists on all hardware platforms running 5.3 that
  503.           may cause a kernel stack overflow. Patch 158 is available to work
  504.           around this problem. This patch can be found on the 5.3 NFS CD (part
  505.           number 812-0128-005). From the NFS release notes for the patch (note
  506.           the recommendation to not load the patch unless you see the actual
  507.           problem):

  510.                  1.2  Bugs_fixed_by_patch_SG0000158

  512.                  This patch contains fixes for the following problems which
  513.                  exist in IRIX 5.3 (bug numbers from SGI bug tracking system
  514.                  are included for reference):

  516.                     o Changes were put into the kernel which allow the kernel
  517.                       stack to be increased by an additional page for real-
  518.                       time processes and otherwise on an as-needed basis.
  519.                       This increases the reliability of the system by
  520.                       eliminating scenarios in which the kernel stack might
  521.                       overflow and panic the system (bug #240710).
  522.  
  523.                       This patch is not needed unless a particular kernel
  524.                       stack overflow problem has been encountered.  Running a
  525.                       layered file system over NFS is one scenerio in which
  526.                       this problem has been seen.

  542.           fgl.h is fortran OIpenGL bindings. These are broke in 5.3 MR and
  543.           programs will not compile. A patch will be issued as the fix.

  545.         o  Desk Overviews:

  547.           ov(1X) will not work after May 15, 1995 unless a new license is
  548.           issued. This will be a support issue on that date. The user will see
  549.           this message (you can reproduce this by commenting out the ov license
  550.           in /var/netls/nodelock) when they run ov after May 15 (note that they
  551.           may be running past May 15 and may not see this until they log off
  552.           and restart ov at the next login):

  554.                 No Desk Overview licenses
  555.  
  556.                 Due to a software patent dispute instituted by Xerox
  557.                 Corporation, the Desks and Desks Overview features of this
  558.                 version of the IRIX operating system are now optional and may
  559.                 or may not be available to you after May 15, 1995.  On this
  560.                 date, these features will be disabled unless you have entered a
  561.                 license code obtained from Silicon Graphics.

  588.   7.  Marketing Information

  590.      CSD marketing is running a 5.3 promotion to encourage users that are not
  591.      covered by a support agreement to upgrade to 5.3. The primary promotion is
  592.      a reduced price for IRIX 5.3 when the customer purchases a support
  593.      contract. Other promotions will also be available (i.e. reduced price for
  594.      IRIX 5.3 for those that absolutely do not want to buy a support contract).
